Miyapunu
This print is of Miyapunu – the turtle that comes from the sea. This turtle is crawling along the beach trying to find a place to lay her eggs. Every year the miyapunu come to lay their eggs on the shores at North East Arnhem Land where I live.
We know when it is turtle season because the tree with yellow flowers blossoms. This is a sign for Yolngu to go gather eggs and hunt turtle.
The eggs are very good eating and the turtle meat too. It is part of our traditional diet.
We call the eggs Mapu. We cook the mapu in hot boiling saltwater.
