Love me Safely
This print was done for health purposes. Marrnyula has done the same picture before but that was painted onto bark.
The Northern Territory Department of Health bought that painting and requested for her to do another.
She has done so to show people about health and safety within aboriginal and non-aboriginal communities.
This print was done in response to a request by the NT AIDS & Hepatitis Council for the artist to attend a sexual health conference in 2013. Marrnyula painted a bark painting with the same theme and message which was turned into a poster in the early 1990s which was brought by the NT Department of Health. A print was editioned with the same design as the painting in 1999. This print carries the same message – If you love me, Love me safely – and is used to help prevent AIDS through encouraging condom use. It is a very radical image in Yolŋu society as it depicts sex.
Printed September 2013
