Djan’kawu Ŋaṉmarra
As told by the artist:
‘This particular woven mat was used by the Djan’kawu sisters. The Djan’kawu asked each other
“What is that floating in the water?”
“That is a conical mat, that can conceal and protect the female children from the sun.”
The Djan’kawu sisters were called Maḏalatj and Bitiwurrurr. This story has been passed down from generation to generation.’
