Baru, Djaykung ga Wak’wak
As told by the artist
‘My mother’s totem is Baru (crocodile).
The Djaykung (file snake) and the Wak’wak (water lily) represents my grandmother’s totem. My grandmother (Djandi Gurruwiwi) passed away in 2008 when my first baby was 6 months old.
This is my first linocut and my waku (aunt) Dawn Gathang Yunupingu taught me how to draw this image.’
