“A little ḻarrakitj (hollow log) is put into the sand at low tide at a place near Raymaŋgirr to a source of spring water, we use the spring water to wash away the worries from our mind.”

This painted surface depicts country close to Raymangirr, on the coast of Arnhem Bay. It is a sacred and restricted area where freshwater is known to spring to the surface of the beach at the low tide region. Sacred ceremonies of this area are said to see a ḻarrakitj placed over the mouth of this spring at low tide, where the water from this sacred font bubbles up over the top.

The miny’tji (sacred design) in this print represents this place and the different character of the waters moving from anger and turbulence to the calm of resolution, bathed in the warmth of the suns rays. Manifest and central to the design is the fallen trunk, the sacred ḻarrakitj.
