Description
Djul’djul is the daughter of the famous Gälpu clan artist Mithinarri Gurruwiwi. She is a very precise and knowledgeable wood carver and painter. This is one of a series of three brass figurines she has created that are based upon her small wooden sculptures. This is Miyapunu – the sea turtle. There are numerous species that nest in the region, Green, Hawksbill, Olive Ridley and Flatback. Every year in the Dry Season turtles come to the raŋi (beach) to lay their eggs. Its a very important season for Yolŋu.
