NAARM/MELBOURNE | Now open in the gallery and online: Dhopiya Yunupiŋu’s ‘Djärritjarri - The Woven Cloth’.

Standing tall in the gallery space are two larrakitji (memorial poles), painted with the intricate cross hatched line work that is this exhibition’s most significant motif. Yunupiŋu’s works are inspired by her knowledge and connection to Makassan traders, the Indonesian fisherman with whom the Yolŋu people had a rich relationship for hundreds of years. The detailed line work on these larrakitji speak to the material history of this relationship, to the textiles and sails that gave life to these journeys.

“I paint this flag, this sail, this material, the flag that was given to us by the Macassans. This flag is for Yolŋu and Macassans, this painting that I paint here, it is from the beginning, from a long time ago. From before we were born.” – Dhopiya Yunupiŋu

Our print of the week is ‘Bawu’ by Marrnyula M Our print of the week is ‘Bawu’ by Marrnyula Munuŋgurr, picked by senior printmaker Bitharr Maymuru.

Bitharr said ‘I picked this print because it tells about the flags we use for ceremony, Bawu. This is the Madarrpa and Mangalili clan design. The white represents the clouds, and the blue represents the water. This blue comes from Blue Mud Bay in Bäniyala. This print was designed by my Mukul (Aunty) Marrnyula who worked at the Yirrkala Print Space before me’.

You can shop the limited edition prints made by our talented Miyalk in the #yirrkalaprintspace on our website at https://yirrkala.com/product-category/prints, or through the link in our bio.
