Buymarr

I am a Gumatj man. When I was a little boy I lived with my family in Buymarr, which is a beautiful peaceful homeland on the beach approximately 100kms from Yirrkala. It was here that my family taught me about the land and the sea and how to hunt, gather and prepare food. In those early years my mother, aunties and grandmother also taught me Yolŋu sign language. I moved to Yirrkala when I was 7 years old to start school, but I return to Buymarr often. I love it there. These pictures give you a glimpse of my relaxed homeland and also of some other places I visited often as a child to hunt, gather and play with friends and family. This is my homeland, Buymarr. My home by the sea and the rock mountain named Ŋalandarra, where the flag flew. Ŋuykal (kingfish) swim in the saltwater here, so we stand up on the rock mountain Ŋalandarra to see where they are schooling, then we know where to go spear fishing. The long beach stretches up to the sacred river called Gutatjpirrarr of the Yirritja moiety and when we look out over the saltwater we can see the sacred white rock called Dhukururru. My märi (mother’s, mother) is of the Yirritja moiety, the Wangurri clan, and is the landowner of Buymarr. Our family are the caretakers. Waŋa marrkap’mirri – my beloved homeland.
