Deturru’s father is Djalaliŋba Yunupiŋu – a senior clans person for the Gumatj clan. He is a senior consultant for Dhimurru (land/sea management for N.E Arnhemland), and is custodian for Lamamirri clan country at Nanydjaka (Cape Arnhem). Her mother is Wuthumpul Gondarra. Deturru trained as a teacher, and worked at Yirrkala School and Laynhapuy Homeland Schools. More recently she has worked as school Liaison for Yirrkala Top School. Deturru paints on instruction from him the country of the extinct Lamamirri clan for which he is caretaker.
