Burŋanydji is a Yolŋu artist from Yirrkala in north-east Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory of Australia. She is associated with the Marrakulu clan and the Dhuwa moiety. Working primarily with natural earth pigments on stringybark and precise wooden carvings and sculpture, Gaykamaŋu continues the long-standing artistic and cultural traditions of Yolŋu bark painting and ceremonial design.

Burnganydji assisted her uncle Guwaykuway Wanambi (now deceased). She now paints in her own right. She began to paint in a highly pedantic formal style with great detail at a very young age which was unusual in the case of a young woman whose patrilineal line was from far to the West of the Miwatj side of NE Arnhem. It was a measure of her uncles trust and respect for her that he gave her this role and she has continued to honour that precise style following his death.

Working with natural ochres collected from Country, Gaykamaŋu carefully prepares stringybark surfaces before applying intricate cross-hatched designs and symbolic patterns. These designs are not purely decorative; they embody deep cultural knowledge and reflect the continuation of ceremonial practice through painting, song, dance and storytelling.
