Gapaya is the son of two famous artists, his mother is Bininydjiwuy Wunuŋmurra, and his father is the late Guykuḏa Munuŋgurr. His father has another daughter, Makamunu, whose mother is Djirrirra. Although Gapaya normally lives with his mum at Gurrumuru he also spends time at Garrthalala and Waṉḏawuy.
