Historical Significance
Our Sea Rights Room has important historical significance. In August 2004 Justice Selway of the Federal Court of Australia convened the Federal Court in this room to hear the evidence in the Sea Rights Case (Gawirrin Gumana vs. Northern Territory of Australia). This case began the long Yolŋu sea rights struggle, which culminated when this case was decided in the High Court of Australia in 2008. The Blue Mud Bay case proved Yolŋu ownership of inter-tidal sea country once and for all.
