ABOUT

Earth Matters: Aboriginal artwork from the Kimberley and Arnhem Land

Earth Matters explores the enigmatic qualities and materiality of white earth pigments in Aboriginal artwork from the Kimberley (WA) and Arnhem Land (NT). The material is one of the oldest types of paint used in Australia, and provides an insight into historic and cultural traditions, revealing trade routes, practices of exchange and adornment. This showcase of two dimensional and three dimensional works demonstrate how artists adopt a range of innovative approaches to working with the material of ochre or gapan, as a medium that is tied to tradition yet also provides opportunity for abstraction, minimalism and experimentation. Artworks in the exhibition are a way to explore the interaction and connection between art, earth, culture and identity, as well as metaphysical, and ancestral elements.

Opening 29 September 2017 to 28 February 2018
